We started from absolute zero with Petar Koev, not knowing how far we would get and what Sofia Live Festival would turn into.

Seeing thousands of happy people, amazing artists, wonderful music and atmosphere is the greatest feeling. Bigger and more meaningful than being yourself on stage. Somehow, knowing that you've brought all these components together creates and brings... something else like emotion and life meaning.

Next year is going to be great, I'm sure. Because there is too much love, quality and faith in this event. There's something else too - pureness. In relationship, in work, in the intentions.

WOMEX deserves recognition for its efforts to create inclusive spaces, such as the Queer Networking Session, aimed at supporting marginalized voices in the global music community. Similarly, the focus on war-torn regions of Africa is a critical initiative that brings attention to underrepresented issues. However, while WOMEX highlights certain areas of diversity, it continues to overlook entire regions like South East Europe (SEE), which are glaringly absent from its programming.

Despite being home to over 55 million people and possessing a rich cultural and musical heritage, the Balkan region remains marginalized in major European music showcases, including WOMEX, Jazz Ahead, The Great Escape Festival and ESNS. My recent study (with the data being verified by the European Commission) on the EU music ecosystem reveals a persistent underrepresentation of SEE artists at these events, raising serious concerns about the inclusivity that WOMEX (and many other events) claim to champion. In 2023, the representation of SEE at WOMEX was minimal, with only a handful of speakers from the region, such as myself, who was invited to speak on a panel unrelated to the region’s own music scene. (important note here is that many of the countries from the region have been actively investing thousands of euros in stands at the WOMEX expo for years, with Bulgaria having dozens of delegates with paid tickets in 2023.)

The exclusion of Balkan artists and professionals from these platforms is not just a missed opportunity; it reflects a broader bias that prioritizes certain regions while systematically ignoring others. There are no speakers, networking events, or dedicated sessions that focus on the Balkan region at WOMEX 2024, which further perpetuates this neglect. While it's crucial to support musicians from war-torn areas in Africa, it's equally important to address the blatant geographical discrimination against the Balkans within the European music scene.

Until WOMEX and similar platforms address these biases and ensure that diversity includes all regions, their commitment to inclusivity will remain incomplete and, frankly, superficial. True inclusivity requires a comprehensive approach that acknowledges and incorporates the rich musical contributions from all corners of Europe, including the Balkans. It’s time for WOMEX to extend its focus and truly embody the global diversity it claims to represent.

The broader European music community must also step up, demanding fair representation and challenging the cultural gatekeeping that continues to marginalize entire regions. By doing so, we can work towards a truly inclusive music industry that celebrates all voices, regardless of their geographical origin.
