"The evidence that social media is causing real harm to teens is now overwhelming.”
My kids are still very young, but I have already had the conversation several times with other parents: “at what age would you let your children have social media?”.
Maybe never as kids? I don’t want to be that overbearing parent, but 11 years ago I conducted a small qualitative study on the impact of social media use on self-esteem. The results profoundly influenced me and I have been quite anti social media ever since.
Now the US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, in an OpEd in The New York Times, is calling for a warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.
The negative effects of social media are not limited to recent times or specific regions. While the literature shows some positive aspects of social media exist (primarily a sense of community), the overall impact on adolescents' mental health globally is predominantly negative, with individuals seeking validation and self esteem through social platforms more prone to stress, depression, and anxiety.
It is imperative that we advocate for a healthier online environment for our children. Social media companies must prioritize mental health. Let’s push for change.
