Continually bombarding our minds with external stimuli is the norm, but that doesn't mean it's not massively harmful.
French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal wrote, "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." While this is beyond a bit hyperbolic, he was seeing something way back then that has gotten far more intense today.
Most of us live with a bustling mind ALL DAY LONG. Emails upon waking. Business podcast during the morning workout. News podcast during the drive. Emails with eating lunch. Even social media in the bathroom.
Then, we wonder why we can't sleep more than a few hours before being awaken to anxious busyness of mind.
Or, see that our attention spans are so limited that it's hard to hold a conversation with a loved one without multi-tasking.
Professionally, we see a decreased ability to think deeply, so critical for the more important parts of our work. Information flooding becomes the norm and exhausts the mind, hindering the development of complex thoughts and ideas.
Where is the space for your mind to be still. To think. To process. To be creative. To move past the urgent to the important. To be in tune with how we are really doing.
We need to protect ourselves from constant and continuous stimulus. This doesn't come for free. It's a deliberate fight, but the payoff is huge.
Give your mind space to be brilliant again. Who knows what might come forth!
