Highlights
I normally abscond attention-seeking self-gratification; however, today I have been promoted.
My new title of Senior Vice President (Lead Network Security Architect) at one of the world's largest banks is a significant milestone in my career.
What a long road it has been.
In 2006, I started as a vendor-of-a-vendor-of-a-vendor for this same firm.
For 18 years I have endured leadership changes, re-organizations, contract exits, acquisitions, bad management (and good), and at times questioning whether I would be employed at weeks end.
In addition to my assigned duties, I found the time to earn two college degrees (self-funded), multiple certifications, two patents granted with multiple submissions pending.
I will spare the drama of my humble adolescence and vacuous economic prosperity.
Instead, I will impart wisdom in the form of a top ten list to a successful career. (Credit those who taught me and continue to teach)
- Have command over your mute button(s) AND your webcam AND what you share
- 90% of work is showing up, on time. Dependability matters
- Re-read your emails before you send them
- Do not reply-all unless you really (really) mean to
- Never stop learning - read, research, experiment always
- Take notes - your brain is not as good as you think it is
- Actively listen to others, your time to speak will come
- Do not be afraid to ask tough questions, especially to leadership
- Communicate directly and clearly with as little 'uh' 'um' and 'yeahs' as possible
- Admit when you do not know (fail fast) and find a correct un-fabricated answer
As a bonus, which applies to everything in life: be a good human and love always wins.
Stay humble, my friends.
-Ryan
