Today at Gamescom we revealed the gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow, which is a moment I’ve been dreaming about over the past few years: https://lnkd.in/gHuzQwCS

Ever since we built the game’s first combat prototype, I’ve been eager to show the world how we’ve translated the classic Arkham combat system to VR. Ever since I walked around our initial art test scenes, I’ve wanted to show the world our technical and artistic ambitions. And as the rest of the game has come together, I’ve wanted nothing more than to release a trailer that celebrates the terrific work my colleagues here at Camouflaj have done.

Today is that day! After two awesome CG trailers, it’s time to show the world what Camouflaj has been so busy developing since we released Marvel’s Iron Man VR back in 2020.

As I’m sure many of you have heard, delivering a compelling trailer for a VR game is no easy feat. Most VR and MR games are powered by mobile chipsets, the game’s visuals need to be rendered twice (one for each eye), and must be delivered at a higher framerate than almost all flat-screen games on the market. In order to truly appreciate just how stunning VR games can look and sound, they need to be experienced in the headset.

Despite all those limitations, I think all involved in the creation of the gameplay trailer for Arkham Shadow has done an incredible job highlighting the authentic nature of our Arkham combat, the gameplay freedom afforded by VR, and incredible visuals powered by the Meta Quest 3.

Meta and Camouflaj partnered closely with Dark Burn Creative on the creation of this trailer, who are absolute wizards at capturing and editing exciting game footage. I can’t tell you how impressed we were with how well versed the DBC team was with our game, and how great it felt to have partners who are just as passionate about making something great as we are.

We also revealed more of the incredible cast we’ve assembled for this game. In addition to Roger Craig Smith returning as Batman, our game features the talents of Tara Strong, Troy Baker, Martin Jarvis, Khary Payton, Chelsea Kane, and Mark Rolston. The story of Arkham Shadow was directly impacted by the energy each one of these actors brought to the stage and booth, inspiring us to take their characters in directions we haven’t considered.

In addition to releasing our gameplay trailer, we’ve welcomed a handful of select influencers and members of the press to play through a 45-minute slice of Arkham Shadow’s opening chapter. Watching them put the Quest 3 headset on and dive into the game has been a thrilling experience. As with the rest of the world, I eagerly anticipate what they have to say about the game when they post their impressions next Tuesday.

Thanks, as always, for your interest in Camouflaj and Batman: Arkham Shadow <3

Just got home from Summer Game Fest where we revealed our story trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow: https://lnkd.in/gnMqM-x8

Since its May 1 announcement, Batman: Arkham Shadow has piqued the interest of the large and vibrant Arkham community. Along with our partners at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, we've held strongly that if we build something that respects the Arkham series, is canonically accurate, and leverages the power of VR to allow players to become Batman like never before, we'll not only delight existing Arkham fans but also introduce an entirely new audience to this incredible franchise.

The game has also garnered considerable excitement within the core Meta Quest community whom are thrilled to see even more large VR games come to the platform. Last year saw the release of major titles including Asgard's Wrath II and Assassin's Creed Nexus, and this year is already looking stacked with Hitman 3 VR, Skydance's Behemoth, Metro Awakening, Alien: Rogue Incursion, and Camouflaj's biggest game to date: Batman: Arkham Shadow.

The public's first impression of the game came last month via our teaser trailer. Partnering closely with WB, DC, and Meta's internal marketing team, we sought to strike a balance between simply building awareness ("A new Arkham game is coming!") while infusing it with authenticity that only the most dedicated fans would notice. I initially pitched a shorter, more cryptic trailer but thankfully my marketing colleagues had a better concept in mind: "The Hunt"—the tale of a rat being pursued by a shadowy figure through the bowels of Gotham City, leading to a reveal of the first Batman headlining game in many years.

For last Friday's Summer Game Fest trailer, we rallied around a concept entitled "Shadow Descends" which hones in on a central theme of our game—the shadow within us all—and then visualized it in a way to convey a compelling story. It features key characters proto-Harley Quinn, proto-Scarecrow, Ratcatcher, Jim Gordon, Harvey Dent, and the star of our game, Batman, voiced by the legendary Roger Craig Smith.

Sonically, my longtime music collaborator Kazuma Jinnouchi was given the opportunity to craft an original recomposition of the classic song "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" from The Smashing Pumpkins. Getting approvals from none other than William Corgan was a delightful—and intimidating—step in the process. (I chose not to remind him that, back in 2010, I was the guy backstage in Seattle who talked his ear off about his love for Doom and Halo CE.) Thankfully he approved Kazuma's work, which we're all deeply grateful for.

I find it hard to step away from development for major media events, but I'm glad I was able to celebrate the moment with fans and colleagues. Next stop: revealing Batman: Arkham Shadow's gameplay at Gamescom!
