When facing my greatest challenges, my first call was almost always to Darren Walker. During the pandemic, Darren guided me on how to mobilize my team and ensure everyone felt heard and cared for. His focus and reminder to me to keep my eye on "the path forward" inspired the "Cadre Chats" series, "The Path Forward," where leaders such as Gov. Wes Moore, Kenneth I. Chenault, Shellye Archambeau, and many others shared insights during those trying times.

Darren’s recent announcement to step down as President of the Ford Foundation in 2025 is bittersweet. His leadership transcended titles, redefining what it means to lead with compassion, intention, and conviction. He is a generational leader whose impact on millions is immeasurable, yet I know he has even more to show and achieve in his next chapter.

One of the highlights of my month was sitting down with Darren, sharing updates, and hearing about his tremendous achievements—whether distributing over $7 billion in grants or bridging sectors to create more opportunities for all. And what impressed me most was not just what he achieved, but how he achieved it—with grace under pressure and an unwavering commitment to justice.

I am confident that Darren's already immense impact pales in comparison to what he and those he has inspired will achieve in the future. Thank you, Darren, and the Ford Foundation, for your unparalleled support, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰.

Only 1 in 5 businesses survive past their fifth year.

Launching and building an enduring business is the most challenging feat an entrepreneur can achieve. I recently had the honor of keynoting Harlem Capital's Annual Investor Day and General Meeting, sharing the ups and downs of my entrepreneurial journey from high school to Cadre! The conversation, moderated by my friend Henri Pierre-Jacques, was personal AND therapeutic! Henri and his partners at Harlem Capital Jarrid Tingle, Brandon Bryant, along with Gabby Cazeau, Nicole DeTommaso, Melody Hahm, and others —created an amazing environment to reflect on nearly two decades of business building. Here are five themes I shared from my journey:

  1. Embrace Self-Reinvention To build a lasting business, continually reinvent yourself. The world changes, life evolves, and market trends shift. From my first business in web 1.0 to Cadre’s current platform, I've done by best to grow and adapt through each phase. Cultivating mentorship significantly cuts down on learning pains and is an amazing hack!

  2. Diversify Your Life Portfolio Don’t tether yourself solely to your job. Engaging in diverse experiences—parenthood, fishing, coaching—is priceless. Like a diversified investment portfolio, diverse life experiences build resilience and protect you from being overly exposed to any single dimension of professional or personal life. It took me awhile to come around to this one!

  3. Invest in Yourself Like a Pro Athlete Prioritize mental, professional, and emotional investment and start each day with you. Neglecting yourself eventually catches up, and when challenges arise (which they always seem to do at the worst possible times), you won't be the best version of yourself.

  4. Silver Linings in the Journey The journey is the most rewarding part, including the successes and failures. Embrace the journey, celebrate the wins, and learn from the challenges. Don’t get too high or too low; true success is built on both triumphs and obstacles.

  5. Reject Zero-Sum Thinking - Embrace Positive Sum Embrace an abundant mindset. Minimize zero-sum thinking and focus on building trust and collaboration from the outset. My best decisions and hires have not come from negotiating and nitpicking every last point, but establishing mutual trust and alignment from the beginning of any relationship.

Much love and appreciation to Harlem Capital, the founders in their portfolio and LP's in their funds for the opportunity. I left the meeting with total conviction that the enduring businesses of tomorrow are being built today!
