Free from unspeakable pain, compromised vision, tremors, seizures, relentless fatigue, challenged speech, imbalance, loss of dexterity and a God-forsaken brain tumor that incalculably ravaged his right cerebellum, even after 7 months of chemotherapy and 30 grueling rounds of radiation that ended only just 6 weeks ago.
Late last Saturday night, May 11th, Eric’s physical heart stopped, he breathed his final breath and he was released from the confines of a body that simply could not keep up with him. With his vigor for meeting people and learning all about them, his desire to work as hard as he could as much as he could and in service to as many people possible as he could.
For anyone that knew and worked alongside him in any capacity, it will come as no surprise that literally the day before I was rushing him to the ER for admittance into neurosurgery to install an external ventricular drain (EVD) to reduce symptoms and the inevitable fatality of untreated hydrocephalus, he was happily showing me job postings on LinkedIn that he’d saved indicating his top picks for what “he thought he’d like to do for work once he got through this next round of chemotherapy”.
I always told him the only “work” I needed him to focus on was healing and resting, but Eric wouldn’t have it any other way but to continue to strive beyond all expectations.
Because for all the many reasons Eric could have easily called in his physical limitations and told the world “I can’t”, he showed up every single day as determined as ever and defiantly showed that not only “He Could”. And “He Did”.
“I just want to work again, honey”, he’d say. “I just want to walk again, love”, he said.
Now he can.
There are a great many lives that Eric Rutkin touched with his joyful spirit, enduring work ethic and undaunted courage.

—— On a wholly personal note, I am so incredibly moved by the outpouring of support and love that I’ve received from current and former colleagues alike, in-network friends and also complete strangers who are currently walking or have been down the path that Eric and I have walked. I promise to respond to all of your messages, but I know you understand that currently I am juggling a ton logistically while also at the epicenter of grief. All to say, thank you all.

After tireless consultation with the world class Neurosurgeons, Neuro Oncologists, Radiologists and Palliative Care teams at Stanford, who have so dedicatedly fought alongside my husband Eric Rutkin in this battle against the ravages of brain cancer, I have made the heartbreaking decision to begin the process of pursuing Hospice Care for Eric, to give him the greatest gift of love that I can give to My Person and to help him see this battle into its triumphant end. And so my Blue Eyed Boy and I are going to become much quieter over the coming minutes, hours and days, as I spend as much time back in his arms and holding those monstrously disproportionately large hands of his as much as possible. His story will live on in me and all of us who have loved him dearly and learned from him, particularly in his extraordinary fight with brain cancer. He is the bravest man I know and I am in awe of his strength and love. And so at some point in the next couple days up until maybe two weeks, he will say goodnight to me for good and then I can begin the work of continuing his story.
It is one that is truly only beginning.
And as empty and lifeless as I feel at the moment, his life story and journey will continue to educate and rejuvenate mine and I will be only too honored to share with everyone I can possibly reach all about that “one last date” I went on 13 years ago and how it changed my life forever. For the better. And I would do it all over again. …
May is #BrainCancer #Awareness Month and also #Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month. Eric was diagnosed with #NF1 as an infant and one of the nearly 20,000 Americans diagnosed with a malignant #BrainTumor last year.
Eric has been selfless about allowing much of his medical journey to be documented for ongoing research. His hope has always been that lessons learned and treatments developed by studying his unique medical pathology will someday make it possible to reduce the suffering and even mortality rates of either condition. I believe in that hope too. #weargrayformay
