Will the search engines of today remain as relevant as they have been in last 2 decades?

Short Answer: No

As Gen-AI platforms like ChatGPT gain prominence, the classic internet search industry will undergo significant transformation. While traditional search engines like Google may see a shift in their user base, they're likely to adapt by integrating AI capabilities into their services to stay competitive. Additionally, there might be a diversification of search behavior, with users turning to Gen-AI platforms for more conversational and context-driven queries, while still utilizing traditional search engines for specific information retrieval tasks.

What happens to the search advertising industy?

With the shift towards more advanced Gen-AI platforms like ChatGPT, we will be witnessing a transition from traditional “search ads” to “context ads”. Given the large context windows of these tools and thereby have an ability to crystallise the intent of the users, these platforms will be far more capable of retrieving and showing a very relevant “context ad” as opposed to classic “search ad”. This will significantly improve clickabilty of the ad.
