Highlights
For the past weekends and evenings, I have spent many hours preparing to teach my In-House Corporate Counseling class at the University of San Diego School of Law this fall semester.
This will be my third year offering this class. Everyone who has taught in high education told me that it gets easier each year because I could reuse my materials. I also thought naively that I'd take a moment to review and dust off materials before reusing them.
The truth? Each year, I seem to spend more time preparing for my class. I spend hours reading articles (from Harvard Business Review to LinkedIn posts by fellow in-house attorneys) and listening to podcast interviews. Then I remove class materials from last year's curriculum and try to add fresh materials so that I can offer the most updated, relevant materials to my students. I reorder the entire course, rewrite the syllabus, review each instruction, try different textbooks, and revamp the slides.
I also look at my work commitments and travel schedule, and carefully build in Zoom classes. In 2023, I led remote classes from LA, DC, an airport work pod, and a tiny hotel room in Munich. In 2024, I will teach from Istanbul.
Then there are the guest speakers. The students absolutely LOVE having guest speakers join our class. I endeavor to bring 1-2 practicing in-house lawyers as guest speakers almost every week of our 14 weeks together. I spend hours inviting amazing people to speak based on their interest, experience, and expertise (and sometimes, their jurisdiction), reviewing their LinkedIn profiles and their posts, reading anything they may have written, listening to any podcast interviews they've given, and meeting with them to answer any questions and prepare them to join us. A lot goes into bringing in guest speakers too.
Two things are clear:
First, #inhousecounsel jobs are fascinating and never boring no matter where you practice. This is why I have a hard time recycling materials. Our practice is always changing and my class will also need to change as well.
Second, to #teach is to #love. The design and execution are both unbelievably exhausting and incredibly rewarding. A quick shout out to Maja Larson who talks teaching with me and inspires me deeply with her love and passion for teaching. ❤️
Here is a gorgeous photo of USD. It has been named the most beautiful campus in the nation by the Princeton Review. I cannot wait to meet my students in the law school building, which is not the one pictured below. 😅

I am really excited to share that I have been selected for an award by Corporate Counsel in the category of DEI Champion. Along with other honorees, I will receive this award at the Women, Influence & Power in Law (WIPL) conference in Chicago in September.
Of course, I am very honored and grateful for the award. But I am even more grateful for Jessica Nguyen (whom I have yet to meet in person!) for noticing what I was doing without fanfare in our shared professional network to inspire, encourage, support, and connect in-house women attorneys who teach and who wish to teach.
Having experienced an incredible opportunity to teach at the University of San Diego School of Law, I want to share my lessons from teaching widely with those who (wish to) teach. My hope is that together, we can create more support and education for the next generation of lawyers, especially those going in-house sometime during their career. She nominated me without any solicitation and nudged me to provide her information so she could complete her nomination. It is no wonder that she herself was selected to receive an award for her Innovative Leadership! 👏👏👏
In addition to receiving this award, I'll also have the honor of being a speaker at WIPL! 🎙 I learned about the event and the speaking opportunity through Ilona Levine. She encouraged me to raise my hand and also recommended me as a person, attorney, leader, and a potential speaker. I am so grateful to you, Ilona.
I share this as a reminder that, behind every shiny award and recognition is someone uplifting and shining light on others. Thank you for uplifting me with you, Jessica and Ilona. I will continue to look for ways to uplift and shine light on others as well.
Congratulations to all the honorees! I can't wait to meet old and new friends and be saturated with all the awesomeness at WIPL in Chicago this September. 😎🙌🏼
