What to make of the latest US tariffs on China? My Center on Global Energy Policy colleagues, Tom Moerenhout and Trevor Sutton, and I provide a play-by-play for EVs and batteries, solar, and steel.

Our take: The tariffs are unlikely to dent China’s competitive advantage globally in any of these areas, but it would be a mistake to take them as only a symbolic or political gesture. Washington is recalibrating its approach to the energy transition to be stabler in its self-estimation – and American-made.

Discourse abounds surrounding the quadrupling of US tariffs on Chinese EVs. They will save US EV manufacturing, slow US climate goals, or are only a symbolic gesture depending who you ask. My Center on Global Energy Policy colleagues (Noah Kaufman, Chris Bataille, and Gautam Jain) and I argue in Fortune that the outcome depends on what comes next. Tariffs alone won't jumpstart the manufacturing and adoption of American-made EVs. Asking more from industry and a tariff phaseout schedule are necessary follow-on policies to arrive at that reality.
