"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope" - MLK

The Women in Workplace report by LeanIn + Mc Kinsey is out. Link to the full report in comments. Here, I focus on 1-2 findings.

Why we should be disappointed

The 'Great Breakup': Women are leaving corporate jobs at the highest rate as compared to men at the director level and above

One of the reasons?

Despite the “micro” in their name, microaggressions have a macro impact.

Microaggressions are demeaning/dismissive comments and actions- rooted in bias.

78% of women who experience microaggressions “self-shield". They mute their voices, code-switch, or hide important aspects of themselves.

The impact?

  1. Women are 4x more likely to feel burned out than men

Work can be a 'mental minefield'. It jives with some of my experiences. It reflects what I hear from other female peers and women that I coach.

  1. Women are 3x more likely to think about leaving their jobs.

So, we lose out on the benefits of diverse teams and the talent plus experience that women offer.

Why should we have infinite hope? Anger and frustration won't get us far. Anger depletes. Hope energizes. Read this:

"In a recent 1:1 someone wanted to say "Thank You". He said that when he went home after our last 1:1 he told his daughter that he met his boss's boss and "She was really interested and supportive of his work". His daughter interrupted him and said "Wait! Did you just say SHE?". He said "Yes, my boss is a woman, and her boss is also a woman". And he could see his daughter's eyes light up with excitement. He said, "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have that moment with my daughter!"

  • Cynthia Maxwell, VP Eng, Disney (link below)

What an amazing story! I so needed it!

I could feel the little girl's excitement. Her dad's gratitude and learning of amazing leaders like Cynthia felt amazing!

I was reminded of this heartwarming note I received,

"I never met you formally but would always hear your name and loved it because you have the same name as my 7-year-old. I always show her your picture and tell her when she grows up for her to be like you!"

And, a woman who heard me speak at ProductSchool, wrote about me,

"Well, she’s amazing and I want to be her. She began working for banks in India and Singapore, then moved to New York to be the first female developer for an algorithmic trading system provider. Then, she did a part-time MBA and soon began working at Walmart Labs. After 7 years of absolutely kicking ass, she joined Atlassian as the Head of Buyer Experience.

And I was lucky enough to hear her speak"

I had started in tech with zero role models. I was reminded that my presence makes a difference. So does everyone else's.

We have SO MUCH more to do.

We can't rely only on DEI efforts. We MUST educate ourselves, confront our own biases, and take action (see comments)

Building an inclusive workplace is on us.
