Last week a colleague of mine sent me this article. Taking into account that Pavlodar produces almost half of Kazakhstans electricity, it got me thinking

To be honest, I’m on the fence about locating massive mining facilities in the region. Perhaps you can help me clear things up.

The pros and cons that I see.

Pros:

  • investments into the region (although the quality of investments is questionable, none of the components that go into constructing a mining hub are produced in the country, but it looks good on governmental reports tho)
  • mining famrs can be used as building blocks for the data-driven economy, if their computing power is used for other purposes than crypto farming (but most global bigdata players are looking for clean energy, all of ours is brown, so this pro is almost moot)

Cons:

  • it consumes energy that can be used for enterprises, that produce goods used in the physical world
  • it capitalizes on low electricity prices, that are controlled by the govt for the public, and do not contribute as much towards the critically needed rennovation of our grids
  • as a purely mining operation it provides a minimal amount of jobs, that mostly are low-mid skilled technicians and security staff
