Highlights
Over the past few months, I have been working with my co-authors, Prof Meg Rithmire and Dr 张翃Hong Zhang, on a Harvard Business School case study about Pakistan at 75 - providing historical context on its challenges and its opportunities.
I'm delighted to share that last week, the case was taught to the entire HBS MBA class - over 900 students - as part of the Business, Government and International Economy (BGIE) course. The BGIE course, required for MBAs, enables them to understand the global business environment beyond the United States. Students debated the role of Pakistan's colonial history in the state's position today, the relationship between its current civilian and military power-brokers, its ties to foreign powers and creditors, and the resilience of its society in the face of continuous predicaments.
To our knowledge, this is the first case study in HBS's history that teaches students exclusively about Pakistan, and that was studied by every single MBA student.
I am grateful to my co-authors, with whom we travelled up and down the country (including a pitstop at the famous Wagah border crossing - see below!). We learned from politicians, professors, business leaders and many others on how things work in this complex and fascinating nation. Pakistan is the world's fifth-largest country, with over 240 million people, and yet remains largely absent from the global business landscape of emerging economies. Writing this case was an effort to remedy this. Personally, it was an opportunity to ensure that if Pakistan's story is to be told to a global audience, it should be told directly by Pakistanis themselves. EDIT - thank you for the massive response! For those asking, the case will be made available in due course for download through the HBS website. When it is published there, I will share a link here.
