Highlights
Another sad day for sports media: accompanying another round of employee layoffs from Vox Media, SB Nation's entire podcast network has been immediately discontinued.
This follows a previous round of layoffs and podcast cancellations at the brand in February.
Particularly as a past SB Nation site manager, my heart goes out to all those whose careers are affected by what cannot be described as anything other than a drastic decision.
(An intriguing detail: Just one day earlier, eight Vox Media podcasts received Webby Award nominations; none were under the SB Nation umbrella.)
Well, then.
I feel like I've written some version of this exact same thing eight different times since I myself lost my most recent full-time gig at the end of last year, but here goes:
👊Good, authentic journalism is expensive.
👊The price ain't ever going down.
👊Brands that try to cut corners here are going to get what they pay for.
With all this in mind, it's a crying shame that, say, a single algorithm change has the power to make media brands' entire business models go extinct but this is the lay of the land today and the trendline is continuing down, down, down.
So, will we innovate our way out of it?
Or will multiple generations of industry professionals truly end up left out in the cold?
And not simply as a result of an ever-shifting monetization paradigm, but -- and we do need to acknowledge this out loud -- the kind of breathtaking mismanagement from the very top that killed brands like Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and Deadspin and added further insult by attempting to reanimate them as zombified versions of their former selves.
I'll have much more to say on this in time. For now, hug a journalist today!
And support labor unions!!
