Public Service Announcement: We need more people doing valuable work with their hands! If you’ve tried to hire someone to do work in or on your home recently, you know there’s a huge shortage of people working in those industries. Construction in the US alone is facing a deficit of more than 500,000 workers. These labor shortages are getting worse, and will be catastrophic for local economies and communities. Tradespeople are an important part of the modern world. They keep HVAC systems running, fix leaky roofs, keep the plumbing sorted, and ensure the plugs in the wall work, among hundreds of other things that keep your homes comfortable, safe, and in good working order.
At the same time though, these labor shortages create one of the greatest entrepreneurship opportunities that exists for ambitious young people — an opportunity to start something of their own doing something meaningful that can enable them to generate true wealth.
But 74% of Gen Z say there’s a stigma associated with pursuing vocational school. This isn't new. A lot of people have thought about blue collar work as "less than" for a long time, and it's ridiculous. This stigma is putting a future generation of job seekers at a disadvantage, and will be a detriment to homeowners and the economy more generally.
Jobber is committed to changing this narrative. We want to educate people about why pursuing careers in industries like HVAC, plumbing, tree maintenance, lawn care, and many more is smart, lucrative, and should be admired.
Today we launched Jobber’s Blue-Collar Report. The first edition titled “Gen Z and the Uncertain Future of the Trades” examines the stigma and misconceptions of blue-collar work among Gen Z Americans and provides data and testimonials from real entrepreneurs to debunk some misunderstandings about the trades.
I encourage you all to read the report and share it with anyone who cares about living in a comfortable home that works properly.
