This is a simple question with a simple answer.

A client-agency partnership is just like any other working relationship — It requires clear expectations and mutual ownership. It requires open collaboration and constant communication. Most of all, it requires trust with the people you’re working with.

Agency principal Jared Belsky is a Founder, CEO, and best-selling author. He’s also someone I admire and am proud to have worked with albeit only a few times. Jared quite literally wrote the book on client-agency partnerships and has a lot of great advice for how to get the most out of that relationship.

In his books, talks, and articles, Jared offers several pieces of advice for how to best partner with an agency. I took some of his best advice and compiled it here:

Acknowledge Mutual Responsibility — Both the client and the agency are responsible for the success (or failure) of their partnership. Jared believes that clients will get the agency they deserve based on how they manage and engage with their agency partners.

Invest in Building Relationships — One of the best ways for a client to build trust in an agency is to treat that agency as an extension of their own team. Communicate frequently and encourage collaboration between the agency and your team. Share in those wins that the agency helped achieve.

Provide Clear Briefs and Objectives — The best agency partnerships begin with clear expectations, detailed briefs, and well-defined objectives. There’s no quicker way to drive a poor outcome than by not establishing realistic goals and expectations early on.

Engage in Constructive Feedback — Don’t end an agency relationship simply because of unmet expectations. First, take the time to reflect on what you expected from the agency. Then communicate that. Have a discussion. Engage in constructive feedback sessions to communicate the problem and come to an agreement on the solution. In Jared’s words, “therapy is cheaper than divorce.”

Value the Agency’s Contributions — Agencies are intended to be your business’s strategic partner. They’re not a vendor completing a series of tasks for you. They’re often deeply invested in seeing you win — Your success is their success.

At [L]earned Media, we have something we call our “100-Year Relationship Rule” when considering a client engagement. If we can’t imagine working with a client or team for an entire lifetime (100 years), we don’t move forward with the relationship.

Because that’s what a partnership is — A long-term relationship.

And, with clear expectations and a bit of trust, an agency can be your business’s most powerful partner for growth and prosperity. Jared Belsky is living proof of that and his lessons are a powerful reminder of how to make it a reality.

Stay tuned for next week’s Question From Clients.
