Samaiyah Farid

Solar Astrophysicist

Dr. Samaiyah Farid is a solar physicist working as a Project Scientist at the High Altitude Observatory, which is part of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).13 Her research focuses on understanding the thermal and magnetic energy of solar eruptions and how they change over time.13 She uses observational data from solar telescopes on the ground and in space to conduct her studies.1

Dr. Farid is known for her work on small-scale brightenings in and near the boundaries of on-disk coronal holes.4 In addition to her scientific research, she is actively involved in community engagement and advocates for equitable participation in science.1

Recently, Dr. Farid has been recognized for her contributions to the field. In November 2023, she received the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Champion Award.2 She has also been involved in celebrating the achievements of other scientists in her field, such as congratulating Dr. India Jackson for becoming the first Black woman to receive a PhD in Physics from Georgia State University.5

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Farid enjoys spending time with her family, thrifting, and attempting DIY projects.1
