Business is Business…

Being too much of a giver may not be healthy.

I’ve learned recently throughout my therapy and journey, that being too much of a giver may be a flaw.

Sometimes in business we create a personal connection to those we work with and extend ourselves beyond what is agreed at times.

We can not do that and here’s why…

If the tables were turned the client will not care. You also have a responsibility to yourself and other clients.

When you agree to do work you are exchanging time for money. When that timeframe has passed or is overextended it harms you as the service provider. To perpetually give time, energy and resources.

You are then spending time that was not paid for and have to rebalance with all of your clients.

We should always have empathy and sympathy.

However…

I’ve realized that I also deserve the same love, compassion and generosity that I give.

When we give it should be from a place of fullness not dispair or emptiness. Or a sense of obligation but of purpose.

In business the same applies. If that time is not paid for and you are in a perpetual cycle of giving beyond a year of the original time frame…

I do crazy things and feel it is an internal flaw.

No one owes me anything, but when someone shows you that they genuinely want to reciprocate the same energy, then that person or client is a keeper.

When someone wants to take from you when nothing is owed but you continue to give thinking it is the right thing, perhaps that is being a people pleaser. You harm yourself.

If someone kicks you when you are down and takes and feels entitled for you to continue to give. That is not a positive connection.

What happens when you continue to be this “giver” is that others will feel entitled to it and want to take when you have nothing to give and have no concern whatsoever of your well being.

So don’t do it…

It feels strange but this cycle is unhealthy and shows something I need to correct within myself.

You should be treated with the same kindness that you give. When someone respects your time as a client they will respect the same natural boundaries they would want.

Everyone has worked a job and would not want their time to be abused.

In business, keep it strictly business…. If the delay is your fault as the service provider then do the right thing and comepensate the client.

When the tables are turned and you perpetually allowed boundaries to be crossed… The business person on the other side of it doesn’t care and will continue to take and treat you badly for it.

Charge for delays, extended time frames and changes to the scope of work. If a client asks for more they should pay for more.

Changing the scope of work changes the timeline. Delays and setbacks that aren’t your own will throw things off balance. It is your time and as I’ve stated it will never end.

Those who value you will respect and value your time.:)
