A strong reminder to never judge a candidate by their cover (i.e. their resume or LinkedIn profile)! As recruiters or hiring managers, we review more resumes in our careers than we could ever recall. Naturally, bias creeps in. It's human nature to make snap judgments or assumptions based on what we see. Especially when we're limited on time. Recently, I was reminded why it's so important to give candidates a fair shot, even if their resume isn’t polished. I had an application come through for a role with over 50+ applications. This person's resume was outdated, poorly formatted, and even had old recruiter comments on it, plus their LinkedIn profile was pretty much blank. Despite the initial impression, I decided to give them a call, and within minutes, I realised they were very impressive. We booked a meeting straight away. They ended up landing a senior leadership role at a rapidly scaling company, competing against some fantastic candidates. It only took a few extra minutes to help them update their resume, and it was well worth the effort! A lot of candidates are often just as strapped for time. Empathy and patience are crucial to ensuring they get a fair chance. 🧡
