Samir Maji

Samir K. Maji is a Professor at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay).12 He is also the Professor-in-charge of the Sunita Sanghi Centre for Ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases (SCAN) at IIT Bombay.13

Professor Maji's research interests include:

  1. Studying mechanisms of protein misfolding, aggregation, and amyloid formation associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Prions.12
  2. Understanding the role of amyloid hydrogels in tissue engineering, disease progression, and drug delivery.1
  3. Investigating p53 amyloids in cancer.2
  4. Exploring the role of amyloid in secretory granule biogenesis in mammalian organs.2

Dr. Maji has an extensive academic background, including:

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta (1996)
  • M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta (1998)
  • Ph.D. in Peptide Chemistry from the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (2002)2

He has held postdoctoral positions at Harvard Medical School, the University of California, Los Angeles, the Salk Institute, and ETH Zurich.2 Professor Maji has received numerous awards and honors, including being elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2021 and a Fellow of the National Academy of Science, India (FNASc) in 2020.2
