229 days of unemployment have come to an end—229 days full of joy, laughter, adventuring, exploring, nurturing my interests, diving into new hobbies, and creating community.
After my tenure at Upwork abruptly came to an end, I decided to dive straight into my passions. In my first two weeks, I installed a drip irrigation system for my garden, built a ten-foot wooden table, and learned to hardscape in order to create the perfect summer oasis. I went from a novice to an experienced gardener who produced over fifty pounds of produce. In the months that followed, I leaned into reconnecting with parts of myself I had neglected. I learned to DJ and hosted my first Juneteenth party where my friends enjoyed my 70s-inspired set, ate from my harvest, and gathered around the table I made.
I decided to travel to new places to visit old friends and ended up going to over thirteen destinations. I ate my weight in gluten-free pasta and pizza through Milan, Florence, Rome, and Venice. In Berlin, I hugged my friend whom I had not seen in five years. I visited Beethoven’s grave in Vienna. In Prague, I marveled at the preserved architecture. In Lisbon, I sat by the water and was grateful for the time to reflect and relax. In Cape Town, I showed my partner my favorite places in the world, and she surprised me with the most magical proposal.
I was renewed and refreshed after traveling, and I started the Software Development Certificate program at the City Colleges of Chicago via their Future Ready Grant. I began playing with the South Loop Symphony and am now writing my first orchestral composition, which will premiere in the spring. This time was truly extraordinary, and it would not have been possible without my fiancée, Yerika, who supported me and pushed me to take time to rest.
Throughout this time, I also had the support and guidance of my networks, which include my mentors and peers: Derek, Lori Lee, Ian, Dalton, and Alanna. With my community by my side, I knew that I wanted to continue my career in a Sales Engineering role with a product I was passionate about. This past Monday, I started my new role as a Solutions Engineer for Shopify. Thank you, Michael, for welcoming me onto your team, and Lindy, for your guidance during my interview. I am so excited for what’s to come in 2024!
