Here’s a personal story to encourage you to pick up that music hobby you may have left into your childhood..
Today I performed at my piano school’s summer concert after 8 months of taking lessons again. My 4 yo son was there to cheer for me. As an ice breaker, I mentioned to the 50ppl audience that “my previous performance was 25 years ago at my former music academy. Back then I played ‘elephants’ march’ and today I may play you ‘elephants’ waltz’. Please laughed awkwardly, like Finns tend to do. I played Chopin’s first grande valse Op 18 n 1.
It went well, although I was in full panic mode. My son said I was the second best after ‘the march song’. Amazingly the song he referred to was actually Chopin’s funeral march, so he clearly knows classical music already.
This past eight months I’ve been focusing to play from my memory. I currently hold over 30mins of playing in my head, something I never through oI would be able to do. I was always stuck with those notes. Next milestone will be to finish my childhood ‘music academy’ and perform my own recital before Xmas and then aiming to do an actual ‘degree in music’ at a local conservatory. Wish me luck! Today music remains one of the best ‘meditative states’ in my life, alongside with being offline with kids and at the gym.
Based on this experience I highly recommend you dig up those old notes and give your old hobby another chance.
