As you may know, I left my job as Managing Editor at the LA Times earlier this year. I’ve spent the last few months resetting and thinking about what I’d like to do next. That's where I need your help!
I’ve been thinking a lot about the time at BuzzFeed News when I’d describe my job as “building a spaceship” — and that’s the energy I’d like to recapture. With that in mind, I’d like to shift my focus towards consulting and freelance editorial projects to give me the freedom to work on building out more creative ideas.
I’m not closed off to full-time work, especially if it’s a position that would allow me to build a team and a strategy. If you have any leads, I would be glad to hear about them.
I believe I bring a lot to the table for any organization or leader looking to launch a project. These are some of the skills I’ve built up over the years:
Audience Development: The core of my journalism career has been built around both figuring out where to find audiences and building strategies around connecting with them across different platforms. This included different platforms — from social media, phone alerts, newsletters, paid membership to finding how to build an audience for live programs on social media.
Editing: The first few years of my career were focused exclusively on commissioning and editing stories — although my experiences with editing have been more sporadic in the last few years, I have a good eye for successful coverage. Change Management: At the LA Times, a great deal of my efforts were focused around helping along its digital transition. Navigating a big shift in both culture and approach is very difficult, and I was working closely with my leaders to pull this off with a lot of strategy and care. This also includes helping build a digital operation and finding healthy ways to integrate data into workflows.
Hiring and Recruiting: I entered senior management at a time when there was a great deal of discussion about how to widen the range of candidates for jobs — and I often coached managers through hiring effectively and fairly, and I love to do this work.
Career Pathing: One of my biggest strengths is my problem solving skills, especially when it comes to understanding how to build paths for staff and thinking about how to grow their careers and move them around where it is appropriate.
Building and Implementing Systems: At both the LA Times and BuzzFeed News, one of my big projects was creating a budgeting system to make sure that all members of the publication process were both aware of which stories were coming down the pipeline but also to create a transparent and centralized place to see what kind of stories were in the works. This helped build better relationships between teams and improved overall communication and organization.
