Sarah Carter

Visiting Executive Director, Center for Design and Material Culture, in the School of Human Ecology at UW-Madison

Sarah Carter, an accomplished historian and expert in American material culture, holds a Ph.D. in History of American Civilization from Harvard University. She furthered her education with an MA in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware and an AB in History from Harvard. Her academic journey began at the prestigious Boston Latin School for her high school education.

Sarah's professional journey includes serving as the Visiting Executive Director at the Center for Design and Material Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has had significant roles in academia, having been a Lecturer on History at Harvard University and a Curator and Director of Research at The Chipstone Foundation. Sarah has also contributed to the field as a Chipstone Fellow and Lecturer in Material Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a Fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She previously held a position as a Lecturer on History and Literature at Harvard University.
