Head, Microscopy Facility at Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute

Prof Sarah Ellis is the Head of the ACRF Centre for Imaging the Tumour Environment (CITE) at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI) in Victoria, Australia.12 She joined ONJCRI in 2020 to consolidate and grow the Microscopy Platform.1

Prof Ellis has over 35 years of experience in histology, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and image analysis.2 She completed her Master of Science degree at the University of Melbourne and later earned her PhD in 2011, investigating the bone marrow niche of hematopoietic stem cells.12

Before joining ONJCRI, Prof Ellis was the Head of the Centre for Advanced Histology and Microscopy (CAHM) at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.1 Her research has focused on exploring the role of polarity proteins in hematopoietic malignancies, supported by NHMRC grant funding.1

In her current role, Prof Ellis manages state-of-the-art microscopes for investigating complex interactions between immune cells and tumors.2 She is actively involved in the scientific community, serving as the Secretary of the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society and the Victorian Representative for Light Microscopy Australia.2

Prof Ellis is passionate about mentoring students and researchers, supporting their projects, and advising on the best ways to utilize advanced microscopy techniques in their research.1
