Highlights
It’s only when you step away from the hustle and bustle of Bangalore that you truly appreciate the transformation unfolding in the heartland of India.
At the suggestion of my friend Archana Priyadarshini, I met Surya, Suraj Kumar Verma & Varun Rathi two years ago, and we made a small investment through the Blume Founders fund.
Surya had been urging us to visit Lucknow to see firsthand the scale and impact of what they’ve built UnORG. Last week, Jeevesh Saxena, Anurag Pagaria & I visited Lucknow, Raebareli, and beyond.
These three young men—from India’s top institutions, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow—could easily have been pursuing high-paying, million-dollar careers in India/ U.S. Instead, they chose to work out of a small office tucked away in GomtiNagar, Lucknow.
UnORG is building a B2B Marketplace for the Unorganized Food sector in India.
UnORG started by tackling real challenges faced by ‘thela-walas’ (street vendors). We’ve all enjoyed a vada pav, pani puri, or dosa at a thela, but how often do we consider the lives of these vendors? Their routines? Their challenges? They operate day-to-day, buying fresh ingredients every morning to avoid tying up their limited working capital. Unorg today acts as the BigBasket for thela-walas. They consolidate demand, providing high-quality staples like dal, oil, atta, chawal, and maida at affordable prices with reliable delivery. Today, they serve over 2,000 thela/dhaba walas across Lucknow, Noida, and Ayodhya, all while maintaining razor sharp focus on margins and with minimal burn.
Their ambition is to expand across all of Uttar Pradesh. As Surya casually remarked, “Ek UP ko serve karke, hum unicorn se bahut bada bana sakte hain” (By serving just Uttar Pradesh, we can become something much bigger than a unicorn).
As I flew back to my cocoon in Bangalore, my heart was filled with a deep sense of hope and goodwill. I sincerely hope to see these young men soar, lifting thousands of thela-walas, Dhabha-walas along with them.
