On the Passing of Johan Galtung – A Tribute to His Endearing Legacy Johan Galtung passed away a few days ago after 2-3 years of illness. A Norwegian sociologist, often cited as the Father of Peace Studies, he founded the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (1959), the world's first academic research center focused on peace studies, as well as the influential Journal of Peace Research. I had the pleasure of inviting him to Doha in 2013; my initial interest in studying Gulf transition started then. I spent three days discussing his experiences of mediating the most difficult conflicts around the world, which he detailed in his book – '50 Years –100 Peace and Conflict Perspectives.' He published more than 170 books, and I have read six of them. A Future After Oil - Six Proposals is part of the book, I co-authored a few colleagues.

His advice influenced my early years of activism, emphasizing solutions, humility, and empathy. I hope his legacy will endure. We will miss you, Johan.

It is with sadness that I learned of his passing as soon as I woke up today. I always admired his scholar-activist role, where he tirelessly fought to make the world a better place, particularly for those marginalized in the Global South. I only knew him from afar, had a few interactions, and invited him for a keynote speech to discuss his journey regarding the loss and damage fund. He was at the forefront of negotiations with policymakers and world leaders during the COP summits. His passing will be a devastating blow for many of his colleagues and friends who have worked with him since the beginning of climate negotiations in 1992. His work on climate adaptation and vulnerability assessment for the poorest communities remained central to IPCC reports. Saleemul Huq's legacy will continue to inspire us all to champion the cause he held so dear. His indomitable spirit and dedication to a more equitable and sustainable world will not be forgotten. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un
