What you get from your work is in who you do it with. The quality of the output and the quality of the experience.

strangers and robots emerged because of who I made it with:

My girlfriend Reia Tong is the talented artist at work in the book's illustrations (the beautiful cover and line drawings throughout). My cousin Maddie Nieman is the design genius behind the website. Grafiche Milani S.p.A. is the artisan printer that gave the creative work its physical form (Martina Fabris & Elena Castagnino were expert guides). My aunt Carol Considine is the patient editor who helped polish the prose. My friends Ali Hussain, Cory Blitz, Matthew Skoro, Maya Walker, Pat Riley, & Yoon-Ji N. read drafts and provided transformative feedback that shaped the final direction. My friends David Gerard Clavens and Christopher Cox are the marketing masterminds courageous enough to tell me when my messaging wasn't there yet and push me to sharpen. Designer and artist, Brian Madden was a beacon and mentor as I ventured from business into the world of art.

More than 300 strangers stopped to talk to me on the street. Willing to be vulnerable and share something intimate. These fleeting moments of connection and collaboration are the very essence of the work.

A year ago, I approached a stranger on a New York City street corner. Me: “Can I ask you just one question?” Him: Tentative nod. Me: “What is the meaning of life?” Him: Smile. Long pause. “Well, I’m not sure there is a right answer to that question. But here’s what I think…”

Then I went and did it again. And again. More than 300 times. It was among the most beautiful experiences of my life. And it forever changed the way I look at the world.

At the same time, AI was provoking the world’s imagination. I wanted to see what robots would make of our big human question. They did not disappoint.

If you need inspiration - go talk to strangers. It will astound you. Feed you. Heal you.

And if you’re curious about my experience - I put it all in a book. You can find it, and more of the story, at
