Scott Petersen

Senior Lecturer at Yale University

Dr. Scott Petersen is a distinguished composer, performer, and electronic musician known for his expertise in improvisational electronic music, analog electronic instrument design, experimental music programming, and open music technologies.

His artistic portfolio is multifaceted, inclusive of compositions for various setups ranging from large orchestra to small ensembles with and without electronics, as well as sound installations, film/animation scores, and laptop improvisations leveraging custom-designed hardware and software interfaces.

With a notable presence in both the United States and Europe, Scott is a founding member of the New Haven Electronic Music Composers group (El MuCo) and the DIY maker space MakeHaven.

In academia, Dr. Petersen holds the position of senior lecturer in the Computer Science department at Yale University, where he also serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Computing and the Arts major, imparting knowledge through courses on computer music and intermedia.

Scott spearheaded the Open Music Initiative at Yale in 2014, endeavoring to introduce open-source hardware and software to the university's music community, and has previously contributed as the Technical Director of the Yale Music Technology Labs.

His academic journey includes pursuing a DMA in Music Composition with a Digital Emphasis from the Eastman School of Music, an MM in Music Composition from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and a B.Mus in Composition from the same institution.

Throughout his career, Scott Petersen has also held roles like Program Director of the Open Music Initiative, Lecturer, and Teaching Assistant/Instructor at prestigious institutions such as Yale University and the Eastman School of Music.
