This past week I wrapped up another fantastic summer session teaching high school Core Filmmaking at SOCAPA (School of Creative and Performing Arts). This summer instead of working at SOCAPA's Burlington, VT campus I've been teaching here in NYC at the New School. It's been awesome watching teenage students from around the world navigate New York for the first time. And film movies in public with actors from the SOCAPA acting program. And experience Washington Square Park and Union Square etc in all their unpredictable glory. I'm still processing what I've learned this session myself, but I did have a couple students mention to me that it was the first class they ever had that they felt like they were treated like adults.
In any class I teach, my student's films are important and their voices are heard, no matter their age. And the stakes filming out in public are high, especially in New York. So they have to be treated like adults. If you're ever looking at a young person's production resume and they have SOCAPA core film program written on there, go ahead and hire them. You'll know that they've been working on professionally-run sets since before they got accepted into film school.

Day 3 of 4 the Big Apple Film Festival is today, and so far the atmosphere has been extremely positive and supportive all around. The screenings have been packed with filmmakers and exuberant attendees. (Note to my industry colleagues: you don't know what you're missing while you're in Cannes!) I had the privilege of spending the whole day at the festival yesterday binge watching shorts and features, narratives and docs. Highlights included the gorgeously grotesque short film "One Happy Customer" by the directing duo WATTS, and the feature doc I can't stop thinking about "Arriving in Five Minutes Period", a portrait film by directors Trevor Lyon and Colby Smith about a suburban NJ Door Dash delivery worker who, as a rule, accepts every order. No matter what.
Tomorrow, Thursday evening 5/23 is closing night -- finally World Premiere time! "The Last Movie They Ever Made is screening at 5pm at Look Dine-in cinema W57th street. Tickets are still available exclusively through the Big Apple ticket site: https://lnkd.in/e7dhZn8i
Major shout-out today to Columbia University School of the Arts communications team, who just dropped this fantastic write-up about our upcoming screening and our production's deep roots in the Columbia grad film program. It includes some spot-on quotes from my fellow producers and co-stars Micah Paisner and Alice Shindelar. Take a look! https://lnkd.in/efDT2Cte
