I don't understand any of these agency owners that use mass cold email tactics or appointment setters.

They're getting garbage leads and hurting their brand when they land unprompted in someone's inbox with a cold script and their company's name behind it.

I get a dozen of these a week via email and DM, and unless it's highly personalized, I send it straight to the trash.

If you're an agency trying to drum up new biz you should be doing one of two things:

  1. doing your best possible work for clients, and then asking them for referrals.

  2. sharing value-adding content.

If you do these two things you'll have more than enough business.

We all know someone who flexes how many rewards points they have on their Amex card. And you have to admit, if they’ve got a platinum card and 1 million points, it’s impressive.

Why?

  1. it signals status
  2. it means they have money, and
  3. we know it gets them benefits and access to special events that normal card holders don’t have.

And to be clear, why does this work for Amex or any company with a loyalty program?

  1. the gamification of a point system gets people to spend more
  2. it allows brands an owned communication and data channel, that they don’t have to pay Google, Meta, Amazon or anyone else for.
  3. it helps build brand affinity and loyalty, by paying the customer back through exclusive rewards or free/discounted product

Iif you’re a retail (brick and mortar OR ecommerce), restaurant, hotel, airline, fitness club, personal care, consumer electronics, apparel or even a gas station brand, and you DON’T have a loyalty program in 2024–you’re falling behind.

So what does the future of loyalty programs look like? The video below is from the streetwear apparel brand KITH. These guys have clearly done a lot of thinking about their loyalty program and I would consider them at the cutting edge of loyalty and rewards right now.

Things I like about KITH’s new loyalty program:

✅ It requires you to use their app which allows direct communication without paying for ads, email or SMS, and allows the brand access to more customer data ✅ It imports your PAST 12 YEARS of purchases and counts them towards your points. In the age of companies nickel and dining consumers with “gotcha” fine print, this is a massive win for the KITH brand in doing the right thing and effectively saying “we appreciate you, we got you.” ✅ The reward program has 3 tiers, but it offers more than just discounts. Not only do various rewards unlock exclusive apparel you can’t buy anywhere else (SMASH that status button), but they also offer exclusive access to awesome EVENTS–both private events hosted by the KITH community, AND popular public events like NBA games and concerts. ✅ You don’t just earn points for purchases. You can also earn points for checking in to digital and real world events. Talk about brand participation more than just the transaction. Love it.
