I was very lucky to meet - as part of the Instituto Serrapilheira Scientific Advisory Board meeting ten days ago - and get an insight into the work of the extraordinary Prof. Faith Osier (https://lnkd.in/e4TE9eid), which had the unintended but beneficial side-effect of helping me read this piece on access to #vaccines in #Africa with a slightly less uninformed lens:

I loved writing the Journalism Funders Forum newsletter for ~3 years, and eventually serving an audience (if my erstwhile EJC, GFMD and Philea colleagues had it right) of - at its peak - ~3,000 people and institutions across and beyond Europe who wanted someone to give them an insight into how, why and where #publicinterest #journalism was being funded (or not) in Europe. It was a chance to delve deep into ecosystems, topics and countries that seemed only rarely to get coverage or serious consideration in respect of their independent journalism or #philanthropy.

The wonderful folks I worked with showed incredible forbearance for my weird in-jokes about journalism and funding (there are some, I promise), and for my commitment (prescient, I believe, in the age of the LLM) to long-form interviews with funders and investors. I hope it was a worthwhile value-add to both funders (the primary audience) and the wider independent media ecosystem across Europe. I’m glad that the newsletter is in good hands with Robert Nemeth, and that it has been joined by Peter Erdelyi’s independent newsletter Media Finance Monitor too. (Feel free to add links to other similarly focused newsletters on media and philanthropy in the comments.)

The caesura following that project ended with a bunch of reports (media festivals, national journalism funds etc), and I’ve wanted to follow those with some regular writing that’s more reflective, big-picture and, crucially for me personally, more global/Majority World-driven. And not just from my perspectives, but also - perhaps over time, even principally - from the perspectives of those whom I encounter, learn from, work with and admire across the world. (And ideally I’d like to be able to pay those people/organisations for the time they may spend on this.)

So I registered a Substack quite a while ago, with a clear idea of where I’d like to head towards (as above), but much less clarity about how to begin. Despite the kind encouragement of Hamish McKenzie, I’ve been really quite gun-shy about kicking off that series despite having multiple draft posts, a list of people and things I’d like to work with and write about, and even a (fungible) editorial strategy and plan. Also, I’ve been busy.

But I think I’ve now found that first set of posts (thanks, racists, among others, for tipping me over the edge, and thanks also, anti-racists and decolonisers), so, if this sounds like the kind of thing you might like to read, then as a first step, do subscribe at the link below.

If not, genuinely don’t worry - the sheer quantity of stuff - good, bad, mediocre - that’s out there in all media and all platforms means it’s really an act of great faith & generosity to give some of one’s attention to anything at all, or even to weigh up the climate cost of having an AI summarise it.

And if you have suggestions of things, people or places to include, please private message or email me, and let’s see what new trajectories we can unleash...
