🚨 Marketing bullshit alert! 🚨

Southwest Airlines is killing their open seating policy.

I heard they are bringing in a new "rules" committee from Afghanistan. :)

Next to go? Women, music and alcohol....

I kid, of course, but it IS a very serious strategic mistake that will cost the airline BILLIONS in revenue, mental availability and eventually market share.

It also opens the door for a competitor to RE-position Southwest as just another major airline with very low Customer Experience (CX) scores.

Think about it. They stopped being "the low cost airline" --- their tickets cost the same as everyone else.

Now you kill one of the ONLY perceived memorable distinctions you have from your competitors.

Hmmm... What actually makes you distinct now from a CX perspective?

Look, I get it. If you are different, you are going to get complaints from potential customers who don't understand memory or their own internal decision-making process and they are going to ask you to be like everyone else in the category.

IGNORE THEM!

Focus on your superconsumers or "heavy users" and make them happy!

It'll trickle down to those who are infrequent buyers in your category and make you MEMORABLE.

Remember a few years ago when people were DIEHARD Southwest superconsumers?

They LOVED the "no frills" airline because they themselves identified with being "no frills."

Line up and get on the damn plane! Quickly! Sit wherever you want, just get on the plane! Funny and kind people who worked there. Funny and quirky ads. Cheap flights. FREE flights! FREE alcohol tickets!

They just did things DIFFERENT.

Now, let's take seating.

All of the other airlines make you have to sit through 57 group names before they get to Groups 1-50,000....

Plus military. Plus people with kids. Plus folks that need help in wheelchairs.

It feels like there are over 200+ groups that need to wait their turn.

In order to make EVERYONE feel special, NO ONE actually is.

It's completely asinine! Everyone knows it.

Southwest simplified it.

A, B, C.

It was a symbol of how they were DIFFERENT.

They need to fight back as they'll be commoditized alongside the other airlines in no time.

This is a REALLY really bad decision that will have market share repercussions for Southwest over the next 10-20 years.
