I’m in the Toronto area, attending yet another great event hosted by the Enrollment Management Association.

Ahead of these events, I always feel a bit guilty that I’m taking time away from my daily work and responsibilities. But once I get there, as the conversation starts to flow and ideas are shared, I always begin to think “this was worth it!”

Why? Professional development and networking events are some of the best ways to expose yourself to diverse perspectives, current trends and insights, and real-world examples of how others have solved challenges similar to the ones you are faced with.

They also give you a moment to break away from the daily grind to do some reflective thinking, and provide you with invaluable networking opportunities.

If you want to get the most out of a professional development event,  consider adding these questions to your notepad as prompts:

  1. Diverse perspectives: What unique or surprising perspectives did I hear today? How do these perspectives challenge my current understanding or assumptions?

  2. Current trends and insights: What are the emerging trends or insights in my field that were discussed? How might these trends affect my current work or strategies?

  3. Real-world examples: What strategies or solutions were shared, and what were the results? Are there any key takeaways or lessons that I can apply to my own work?

  4. Collaboration and brainstorming: What ideas or insights did I gain from group discussions or brainstorming sessions? How might I incorporate these ideas into my work?

  5. Skill development: What new skills or techniques did I learn? How can I practice or apply these skills in my work?

  6. Building connections: Who did I meet that I want to follow up with? What potential opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, or learning do these connections offer?

  7. Reflective thinking: What new information or perspectives prompted me to reflect on my current strategies? Are there any changes or improvements I want to make based on this reflection?

  8. Confidence building: What did I contribute to the discussions or group activities? What positive feedback did I receive, and how does this build confidence in my abilities?

You won’t be able to answer all of these, but answering even just a few will help you realize how much value you truly got from the event. Give it a try!
