"Speaking from anecdotal experience..."
Thought I'd take a moment to share an update on my journey. If I've had the pleasure of working with you and your e-commerce business in the past, you've likely heard me say this as we strategize on your growth plans. This is the "E-commerce Experience" part of my last position and includes CX, Small Parcel, Packaging, CS, Checkout, CAC/LTV, and more. You trusted me to help you with your business strategy because of my anecdotal direct e-commerce experience. While the past landscape has proven to be a strong foundation for many successful companies, the landscape is changing -- It's been changing over the past few years.
We're seeing a new breed of entrepreneurs taking advantage of easy-to-use technology platforms like Shopify, Etsy, TikTok, etc... to launch an e-commerce business. We're also seeing a shift in customer acquisition strategies. Influencer marketing is becoming a much more dominant and cost-effective way to acquire new customers. Whereas, traditional methods like ads and email marketing have evolved into more customer reacquisition and branding. I won't go into the many other changes at this point. I think we can all agree there are new factors fueling the new e-commerce landscape.
I recently updated my LinkedIn to show I'm working on a "Passion Project" - BayAreaFinesse.com. This is a 2-fold project for me. 1) It blends my professional passion of e-commerce with my personal passion of being the best angler I can be. The 2nd fold is less obvious and serves as the reason for this post.
What has made me an effective leader in this space is my ability to truly connect and understand the emotional challenges of an e-commerce business. Some can regurgitate heresy to come across as an "expert". However, I prefer to walk-the-walk so I can continue to talk-the-talk. Therefore, my 2) is to:
- Once again become the student of the new e-commerce landscape
- Experience the more modern challenges in the ever evolving e-commerce landscape
- Most importantly, find executable solutions
We all know running and scaling an e-commerce business is expensive. Every $ counts. Saving on CAC or Small Parcel is critical. Testing theories are expensive. Before hiring or taking advice from "experts", wouldn't you want them to anecdotally know where you've been to help guide where you want to go?
I've been extremely humbled and appreciative of the many DM's, emails, phone calls, and text messages offering new opportunities. Please don't confuse my "taking a break" with disinterest or arrogance.
What's driven my past successes is my ability to empathize and understand the challenges/problems e-commerce companies face. In order to continue to be an effective leader, the teacher must once again become the student.
Thanks for reading up to this point!
Another chapter has closed as today was my last day at RyderEcommerce by Whiplash. It's been an incredible 5yr journey filled with building a new business product, team, and realizing 9-digit revenue growth from scratch. I will cherish all the relationships made, the excitement of growth, and the experience of changing a highly commoditized world into a value-added offering. This team is the best in the business filled with compassion, empathy, and driven by a customer-first mentality.
There are so many people I worked with I'd like to thank:
To James Marks, thank you for introducing me to my future successes.
Thank you Greg Morello and Jeff Wolpov for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to create something different and special. You'll never fully know how much I appreciate your support and generosity.
Brian Weinstein for the long and sometimes late night strategy talks on how we can revolutionize e-commerce fulfillment.
Cindy Katri for being my partner in crime. Thank you for keeping me grounded and proving/debunking my theories. We made a beast!
To all my carrier partners, thank you for fighting your internal battles based on my vision and word. We made something special together, didn't we?
To all our past and current e-commerce customers, thank you for your trust and allowing me to be a part of your CX business.
There are so many more to thank. If I missed you, I promise to get around to thanking each and every one of you. I learned so much from all of your many diverse perspectives and these learnings helped me grow to be a better person and businessman.
As this chapter closes, another one shall open.
Good luck Ryder eCommerce team! Keep kicking ass and taking no prisoners. There's so much potential to achieve!
