One Thing ends up killing most small agencies: Churn.

Most agency owners are really good at fulfillment - they likely started as a marketer and that is their superpower.

Because of this they spend most of their time doing the work (which is good!)

Then when they realize they want or need to scale, they pour all efforts into client acquisition.

They get pretty good at this too, because as a founder it is a lot easier to sell when you are the one with your hands on the accounts day to day.

It's much more believable + credible to the prospects.

As they focus on sales, quality of work begins to slip.

All too commonly, most agency owners get stuck in the cycle of selling, fulfilling, losing the client, repeat.

This is because they have no client retention system in place.

This is so simple to create with a little bit of proactivity, and it's one of the BEST things you can prioritize in your agency early on.

A simple retention system covers a few key areas:

  • client onboarding
  • regular touchpoints
  • transparency
  • client milestones
  • consideration of overall client experience at every step of the way

After speaking with numerous agency owners over the past 6 years, one thing continues to surprise me:

Most agency owners base their pricing solely on what they think a prospect will accept.

Thats it.

In the early days, this approach might be necessary to gain traction. But at some point, you must understand your service delivery costs and determine the minimum margin needed to scale profitably.

While it's common advice to arbitrarily "always raise your prices," this isn't always the solution.

Consider these questions first: ❓ Will raising prices allow you to serve clients better? (And will you?) ❓ Will it add more value for the client? ❓ Will it enhance the perceived value of your service?

If you can't answer "yes" to these, focus on improving your service offering first.

Remember: Strong service delivery increases demand, and demand drives what you can charge. Know your numbers, ensure profitability, and always aim for excellence in your work.
