The external view of a city like this looks amazing but buildings made of solid stone have no light inside.

Most people spend their lives inside the buildings, not looking at them.

Which is why we build with glorious, glorious glass.

Founders and investors need to really understand which part of the enterprise solutions space they want to play in.

One choice is to be full stack where you build capabilities and deploy technical staff to integrate and customize.

Another choice is to just build platform capabilities, and do so in a way that plays nicely in an ecosystem.

It's sometimes wise to target the end-to-end solutions concept. It's tough to build a platform that handles a lot of use cases if you've never deployed it end-to-end.

That said, you also then put yourself in direct competition with the tens of thousands of solutions integrators in the world.

Systems integrators are some of the largest employers in the world and they are, despite rumors to the contrary, actually pretty good at what they do.

And in truth, a lot of the work they do is pretty low value. Its nit picky work.

If you want to be an end-to-end solutions company, you are signing up to:

  1. Be leading-edge on AI capabilities with a good research organization
  2. Build a strong, flexible platform
  3. Build a strong and large customer-facing delivery organization
  4. Execute all of the nit-picky project work

This is a lot of scope to sign up for. And it requires scaling headcount pretty early in the game.

The problem with scaling headcount is that it becomes hard to change direction fast. And in AI land, a lot is changing. So agility is super important.

I do think it's plausible that being end-to-end is a good strategy in some cases.

But it also is not as necessary as it might look. You can partner, write great docs, build an integrator network, etc.

Most of the scaled SaaS behemoths are also used in end-to-end solution contexts but they don't do the work themselves in house.

In either case, it is very clear that if you want to deploy to the enterprise you can't be one size fits all. Whatever you build needs to actually work in the contexts they want it to work.

And that's tough to build, regardless of who does the integration!
