Sean O'Donoghue

Laboratory Head at Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Sean O'Donoghue is a Conjoint Professor at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science at the University of New South Wales, a Laboratory Head and Senior Faculty Member at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, and a Visiting Scientist at CSIRO Data61.12 He received his B.Sc. (Hons) and PhD in biophysics from the University of Sydney, Australia.1

O'Donoghue has been actively engaged in bioinformatics research since 1988.1 His work focuses on developing computational resources that use data visualization, graphic design, and user interface principles to simplify the discovery of insight from complex biological data.2 These resources are primarily focused on structural biology, systems biology, and sequence analysis.2

He is also the co-founder and leader of two initiatives:

  1. VIZBI: An international initiative aimed at improving data visualization in bioinformatics software.2
  2. VizbiPlus: An initiative aimed at educating and inspiring the general public about cutting-edge biomedical research.2

Prior to his current roles, O'Donoghue spent much of his career in Heidelberg, Germany, where he worked in the Structural and Computational Biology programme at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and as Director of Scientific Visualization at Lion Bioscience AG.12
