Some people might know that my wife and I run a newsletter together called Back to our Roots... We've been writing pretty consistently for the past couple years but couldn't think of how to "productize" it...

While we deliberated what we saw for the future of Back to Our Roots, we had people reaching out to us locally asking us questions like:

  • How do I start a garden if I don’t have much space?
  • How do I set up a watering system?
  • How do I know how much soil to use?
  • I saw you go hunting a lot, how do I get into it?
  • What do I need if I’m going hunting for the first time?

These are all pretty simple questions but then it hit us…

THAT WAS WHY WE STARTED THE NEWSLETTER!

We wanted to help people who were at the very beginning stages of where we were 2, 4, or 10 years ago!

I even connected with a group of homeschooling moms here in Phoenix who needed someone to come teach their 4 to 8-year-olds about the big game animals you can hunt for food in Arizona.

You know, the basics, like what are they, where do you find them, and what they eat. That, plus making it fun and interactive for the kids.

The lesson: Sometimes the customer is trying/has BEEN trying to tell you what they want from you while you're lost trying to think of the next great thing 🤦‍♂️...

So pay attention! Haha!

Here's a situation we've all been in and I can say pretty confidently that we all despise.

You call a company because you have questions or an issue with their product or service and run into the dreaded virtual receptionist.

You know, the one that sounds like this...

Virtual receptionist: "Say representative if you'd like to speak to a representative or say more options to go through my list again"

Me: "Representative"

Virtual receptionist: "I'm sorry, I didn't get that. Say representative if you'd like to speak to a representative or say more options to go through my list again"

Me: "REPRESENTATIVE"

Virtual receptionist: "I'm sorry, I still didn't get that. Say representative if you'd like to speak to a representative or say more options to go through my list again"

Me: *Hangs up, frustrated and cursing that company"

We all have been there and we ALL hate it.

So... Why do salespeople STILL use AI to reach out to their customers hoping that the AI is going to be a delight to speak with or read an email from?

Talk like you're talking to me in person, not like you used an AI to write your entire outreach. There's nothing that gets deleted more in my and any customer's inbox.

Sales orgs need to realize you can't AI your way out of doing the hard stuff like cold outreach/cold calling.

The broader lesson here: You can't AI your way out of any of the things that are supposed to be hard and that build character.
