Consider, for a moment, the shirt that you’re wearing. The phone in your hand. The grade you received on your 10th grade English paper. The rise and fall of your favorite sports team. Your first romantic relationship.
These things can impact our feelings and perceived self-worth. They can feel like a part of our identity. They can feel all-consuming.
But shirts become stained... phone screens crack... English papers are forgotten and lost to the winds of time... our favorite sports teams inevitably come up short… we break hearts and have our hearts broken in kind.
And while these things can be indicative of what is important to us at a particular moment in time, they do not constitute our worth as people.
A job is a footnote in the story of your life. A detail (hopefully) worth mentioning, but not the driving narrative.
We can buy new shirts. Phone screens can be replaced. 10th grade English is a fading memory revisited only in the occasional unpleasant dream. The Raiders will make the playoffs again. There are plenty of fish in the sea.
