Just finished Ray Dalio's “Principles” and it’s incredibly interesting how closely some of Mr Dalio’s life principles match those of Charlie Munger:
-
Both have a principle on how to deal with life blows and see setbacks as a motive to become better
-
Mr Dalio values simplicity, Charlie does the same – however, Charlie puts it under a more sophisticated phrase by calling it Occam’s razor
-
Mr Dalio warns about consultant addiction - same as Mr Munger
-
Both advocate the use of checklist routines
-
Mr Munger seeks disconfirming evidence, an idea he got from Darwin. Instinctively, Mr Dalio seeks to talk with people that oppose his views
-
Both voraciously studied history and are interested in events that could negatively affect them. Mr Dalio arduously studied recessions, while Mr Munger is famous for saying: “all I want to know is where I’m going to die so I’ll never go there”
However, where both seem to disagree is Mr Munger believes that “a year in which you don’t destroy your most beloved idea is a wasted year”, while Mr Dalio seems to create timeless computer algorithms for his most promising investment ideas. Would be interesting to see if these two ever discussed their life principles..
All in all, can't recommend this book enough.
