Highlights
TL;DR Would love to be connected with those who have worked as contractors and/or have gone through times of uncertainty due to their visa status or the impact of the past waves of layoffs in the tech industry in the Bay Area. (Please let me know or share this post with others who might be interested!)
Hi everyone, I’m a PhD student in anthropology at UC Berkeley and conducting comparative research on insecurity, uncertainty, and corporate cultures and ecologies in tech industries in Silicon Valley, U.S. and Pangyo Techno Valley, South Korea. Prior to pursuing a PhD, I worked as a data collection researcher as a contractor at Amazon Lab126 in the U.S. and as a UX researcher at a small startup in Korea.
As I myself have been in a very insecure position as a non-U.S. citizen contractor in the tech industry before, I would love to be able to learn more about other tech workers’ experiences in the Bay Area, especially including those who have gone through the times of uncertainty due to their visa status, employment status (ex. contracted through third-party agencies), or the impact of the past waves of layoffs.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know via DM if you are interested in talking with me for 30 min ~ 1 hour either in person or online - the time can be adjusted to your availability. It will be an informal, unofficial conversation for preliminary research, and I ensure that I will not disclose any identifiable information and the content of the conversation.
Or if you feel like your connections would be interested in this, please forward/share this post!
Thank you so much. #layoffs #visa #tech #bayarea #research
