Sergio Guillen Grillo, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Engineering & Society at the University of Virginia.13 He has a diverse academic background, including a Ph.D. from the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University, a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Carleton University, an M.A. in Environmental Security and Peace from the U.N.-mandated University for Peace, and a Graduate Certificate in Natural Resources Organizational Management from the University of Michigan.1

Dr. Guillen Grillo has extensive experience in sustainable energy policy and finance, particularly in Latin America. He has worked for over 20 years as a researcher, practitioner, and trainer in public interest conflict analysis and resolution throughout the region.1 His areas of expertise include transboundary water management, labor relations, participatory policy analysis, and land-use management.1

At the University of Virginia, he teaches Engineering Ethics (STS 2600) and has designed and directs the UVA in Costa Rica J-Term study abroad program "Social Issues in Renewable Energy Governance".1 Additionally, he serves as the Co-Director of the Online Ethics Center housed at the Department of Engineering & Society of the University of Virginia.1

Dr. Guillen Grillo is also an internationally certified mediator and an accredited conciliator with the Conflict Resolution Center of the Costa Rican Professional Body for Engineers and Architects (CFIA-CRC).1 His research interests include deliberative democracy, peace engineering, environmental policy, sustainable tourism, and renewable energy.2
