Highlights
“I wish the process had been more transparent. I wish we had a clearer idea of what they were looking for ... And I wish there was a mechanism for continued dialogue, rather than what felt like a closed door and a dream ended.”
As someone that has been ghosted by funders myself, this piece really struck a chord. Friends and colleagues, please do not mistake Scott’s large, unrestricted, “no strings” grants as trust-based philanthropy. Trust-based philanthropy comes with much more rigor and responsibility than that.
Trust is a two-way street, and it requires dialogue and transparency. Trust-based philanthropy is, at its core, care-centered and relational. It acknowledges the harms and power imbalances that have been imposed by philanthropy - and comes with a commitment to repair them.
