Exactly a year ago, my career at Kristal.AI came to an end. This closed a bittersweet twenty one months trying to build a platform that offered emerging High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs/Nouveau Rich/High achieving millennials) and their wealth managers a consolidated platform to make small ticket investments in alternative assets (unlisted stocks, VC Funds, PE Funds, Private credit) across the world. Given that Kristal was still a fairly small organization on the business side, it also gave me a chance to look at the daily challenges of building a broader business of building a fully digital, asset class agnostic investment advisory platform. This post is about what didn't work out for us. And what I learnt in the process. The two jobs that I had taken post MBA were always unfinished projects. Jobs that never fructified into careers. What didn't work out in each place is a question for which I am still processing an answer. But when I left, I made it a habit to put down the essence of my learnings about the industry. Something like a frozen in time case study for me to look back at. I have written about my learnings from my time in SUN Group, managing investments in battery materials, here.
