Over a decade ago, I became involved in urban innovation working with partners across Chicago to recover from the Great Recession. We knew we needed a new approach- one that leveraged our economic strengths, invested in new innovations, and rethought our places and spaces- with participation and investment across the public, private and civic sectors. What came from that was… a lot! Several incubators (mHub, Matter, MxD), innovation districts (Fulton Market), skills strategies (Skills for Chicaglands Future), infrastructure investments (Riverwalk) and new sources of capital (venture investments up), and much more from many innovative partners.

Cities across the country also reinvented coming out of the last recession… and now is the time to do it again. As we embrace a monumental shift in our use of space, our economic activity, and the critical public services to enable them, we must redefine our new North Star, leverage data to evaluate reality on the ground, get creative about launching bold yet executable interventions, and importantly, foster collaboration and investment across the public, private and civic sectors.

Left unchecked, urban cores could take decades to recover, but it doesn’t have to be that way. History shows example after example of cities that have reinvented themselves. Civic leaders from the public and private sectors can invest in their urban cores, and now is the time!
