Highlights
My elderly neighbor and his wife walk everyday. They hold hands and have treats in their pockets for the neighborhood dogs. Recently, John (name changed for privacy) got a panicky call from his son who is in Seattle saying that he was in a DUI and had his phone confiscated. The son was in a holding cell and had to post bail. He needed help. John who lives in Austin was worried and told his son that he would take care of the bond. “Dad, please get a cashier’s bond for $38,000 and post it through HEB.”
John heard his son’s voice. ✅ The number was from Seattle where his son lived.✅ His son knew about the neighborhood HEB.✅ The son was living alone. ✅
So he went to his credit union to withdraw the money from his retirement savings.
As John was about to leave, the concerned teller asked John to call his son. John said, “His phone has been confiscated and he lives alone.” “Try calling anyway. It can’t hurt.”
So John called his son. Luckily his son answered and stopped John from sending the money.
This is true crime. This didn't happen on a Black Mirror episode. This happened to senior citizens who live alone. The scammers used Voice AI to imitate the son’s voice. Hacking into personal data to understand locational information like neighborhood and assimilate enough detail to pull off the scam. Finally, the hacker used a plausible emotional scenario to create situational urgency.
Voice is deeply personal and nothing touches our hearts like the sound of distress from our loved ones. We will do anything to help. Imagine this easy to use technology without guardrails in the hands of kidnappers, political players, terrorists and blackmailers
I share this real life story with everyone I know because forewarned is forearmed.
Just like everything else in our world, we seem to have lost the ability to find middle ground in strategy and conversations. I am not against AI or innovation. I am pro regulations that will prevent bad players from further exploiting the weak and vulnerable.

Stepping into true authority is when we acknowledge that we have authored our story and championed our journey through all its ups and downs.

Life Story
Own your story, or others will make one up for you.
Own your history, your mistakes, your triumphs.
As flawed as we are, the way to forge forward is to make peace with the past.
Define your success.
Don’t fret about approval.
Forgive yourself. Forgive others.
Say goodbye to the gossip,
the grudge and the judge.
There is an invisible ledger that keeps the tally. You cannot rewind time. You cannot gamble with health.
You can keep finding higher ground. You can mend fences. You can tear down walls. You can strengthen connections.
Life can take us deeper into division, faster into our neuroses or higher into the service of the heart.
Hold on to your freedom. Use your influence wisely. You can be the problem. You can find the solution. You can be caught in the chaos, Or you can be strong at the core.
You have the right to choose. You have the right to voice. You have the power. You have the choice.
There is truth in the ordinary. There is beauty in duty. If the ground is strong, then the flight withstands the storms.
The mystery of our life is what brings us back to the magic of living.
