LinkedIn's algorithm seems to have changed a lot these last few weeks, reducing average reach of posts from people you follow. Are they the latest social platform going the way of TikTok?
One of the most documented changes in social media has been a move away from social graphs (ie seeing content from the people we follow) to interest graphs (seeing types of content we find engaging, whoever produces them). This typically increases engagement, but also boosts the value of advertising now that brands and influencers cannot rely on organic reach only anymore.
As someone who makes the effort to curate my feeds, I loathe it, but it's hard to imagine LinkedIn not succumbing to it. Not only is it likely to increase revenue, the other reality is that we're all starting to have a lot of connections here and many people are trying to build their personal brand and voice. Meanwhile, a lot of LinkedIn "connections" were reciprocal for a very long time (being connected meant we had to follow each other), meaning we all have pretty messy social graphs.
But I really worry because interest graphs have a tendency to reward "reaction bait" content - and yes, that includes things that enrages us. I frankly do not come to LinkedIn to find ersatz of Instagram or a repeat of Facebook. I come for people who've made being professionally interesting part of their resume. I hope whatever algorithm comes along, it'll find a way to keep things professional.
