I rarely post personal thoughts but this past week has created such a melancholy.
I’ve been reading one of the most thought provoking books I’ve come across in the past decade. That it was written in 2015, pre-dating transformer-based approaches to neural networks and the rise of large language models makes it even more insightful and troubling… that is a post for another day. If of interest, the book is The Technological Singularity, by Professor Murray Shanahan. I came across it when discovering he was an advisor on Ex Machina whilst listening to a podcast. And yes, I know about Ray Kurzweil’s books and perspective.
Simultaneously, watching the news about a yacht whose name immediately triggered such an emotion. Back in 2003-5, I was the lead technology strategist across Europe at Microsoft for ‘information work’ technologies. These included enterprise search and the automatic classification of information using probabilistic algorithms. It fuelled my interest in cognitive science and the emerging field of network/complexity science that would ultimately lead to a PhD a decade later. At the time, one of the competitors I was tasked with tracking was Autonomy. So many memories have reemerged from that era. Combined with a sadness for what is now not to be.
