Shelter Serra

Shelter Serra is an American artist born in Bolinas, California, in 1972.13 He studied studio art at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and later earned his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.13 Serra is known for his eccentric and nonconformist style, which gained attention in the New York art scene in 2009.1

Serra's artistic practice includes:

  1. Sculptures and drawings exploring mass consumption and cultural identity2
  2. Transforming objects into multimedia works that investigate cultural status symbols1
  3. Creating thought-provoking recreations of iconic objects, such as the Hermes Birkin bag and Rolex watches1

His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at galleries in Tokyo, Philadelphia, and New York.3 Serra has also collaborated with notable brands and institutions such as the Art Production Fund, Helmut Lang, Converse, and Chanel.2

Serra's artistic philosophy centers on two core concepts:

  1. Art should be accessible to everyone
  2. Art should reflect the desires and concerns of everyday people in everyday life1

Currently based in New York, Serra continues to create art that challenges viewers to question their values and reflect on the deeper cultural meaning of objects in society.13
